Basic Life Support & Automated External Defibrillator (Level 2)

First Aid StigThis qualification is designed to allow learners to develop their knowledge and skills in basic life support to meet the needs of their role in work or another setting. It is recommended for first-aiders in the workplace environment who have access to a defibrillator.

Learners gaining this qualification will know that cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation form an essential part of the chain of survival. The topics covered are regarded by Skills for Health as being important in maintaining good practice in the safe, prompt and effective administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation.

The qualification means learners should be able to safely and effectively use an automated external defibrillation machine. In line with industry guidance, after 3 years it is recommended that they sit the course again.

The Basic Life Support and Safe Use of Automated External Defibrillator course covers the following modules:

  • Understand the Roles and Responsibilities of a First Aider
  • Assessing the scene of an accident and the casualty
  • Managing an unresponsive casualty
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Safely using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Dealing with a casualty who shows signs of life
  • Effectively handing over the casualty

How is this Course Assessed?

This course is assessed through a multiple choice exam and a practical assessment.

Course cost and duration

The course is held over half a day and is available from £65 + VAT per person, depending on location. The cost includes exams and all course materials. If anyone should fail a free resit will be offered.
